Maine offers Firearms Education courses in two different formats: Home study or Online.
*Skills and Exam Session* covers the following topics: survival/first aid, Landowner Relations, Ethics, and Maine laws pertaining to Firearms Hunting. Hands-on exercises of: firearms handling and safety, map and compass.Home Study Course: Home study courses are available to all students and are taught by trained, certified volunteer instructors that meet State and International Standards. They provide valuable information to the new hunter, insight on the sport of hunting, resources and guidance to the student. They can answer questions otherwise not found on the online course.
The home study course consists of completing a workbook and a 3 hour classroom session of instruction followed by Skills and Exam session*. Students may complete a workbook or present a voucher from the online course, both of which complement the student manual. Students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents, and pass a 50-question Maine State Exam with a grade of at least 70% .Online Course: Students 16 and older can complete the firearms hunter safety course online at hunter-ed.com/maine Once the online course is successfully completed the student will have the opportunity to purchase their hunting safety-firearms wallet card for $19.95. This card will allow them to purchase their hunting firearms license at their town hall, at any Maine licensing agent, or on MOSES. Additionally, students are welcome to attend a Skills and Exam session* to obtain further skills and information provided in a home study course with their wallet card and survival kit. Students 10-15 years of age can complete the firearms safety course online at hunter-ed.com/maine Upon successfully completing the online course the student will have the opportunity to purchase their online course completion voucher for $19.95. The voucher is required to attend the required Skills and Exam Session*.
In the Skills and Exam session* students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in class activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents, and pass a 50-question Maine State Exam with a grade of at least 70%.
